Dj Ruskie -

Soul Motive Resident dj.

MUSIC STYLE: Deepgrooveysoulfulfunkylatinjazzhousedisco business!

Dj Russell Mark's love of music started at an early age. Being brought up in a household where music was a constant,
1970's + 80's Motown, soul, funk, and disco was the soundtrack to his youth.

He started buying music at 12 years of age, mainly Hip Hop and the odd soul album, artists such as The Roots, Pharcyde,
Eric B and Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest and anything else that was played on Yo! MTV Raps. Whatever happened to this

As he grew older his musical taste matured and soul music was the main influence. He started buying vinyl from second hand
record shops and 'borrowing' records from his Dads collection - no he still hasn't given them back yet.

Artists such as Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Roy Ayers, Curtis Mayfield, Donald Byrd and Marlena Shaw are still some of his favourites to this day.

When he finally managed to save up enough money, he bought his first set of turntables and a mixer and started bedroom djing as a hobby. His record collection grew rapidly and house music started to take over following numerous trips the White Isle (Ibiza). After experimenting - in his lab - he soon found that deep, soulful and latin house sat comfortably with the classic soul/disco sounds he favoured.

DJ influences include Danny Krivit, Masters at Work, Kerri Chandler, Roger Sanchez, Joey Negro, Gilles Peterson, Bugz in the Attic and Norman Jay to name a few.

Russell Mark began playing out six years ago starting with a few local bars and private parties, progressing to more established nights and better known venues around London. Highlights include Cafe de Paris (Leicester Square), Plan B and The Dogstar (Brixton), Bloomsbury Ballroom (Holborn) and Charterhouse Bar (Farringdon).

Although a soulful sound will always remain the foundation of his sets, he loves to mix it up with some broken beat, tribal, minimal and electro nuggets.

Like the great Tribe Called Quest once said "can i kick it, yes you can".....
